Conjunctions are important components in Portuguese as they allow the speaker to join sentences and convey useful meanings.

Most Common Conjunctions in Portuguese

Conjunction	Meaning	Example
e	and	Gosto da primavera e do verão. I like spring and summer.
ou	or	Vou tomar café ou chá. I am going to drink coffee or tea.
se	if	Se estou cansado, não saio. If I am tired, I won’t go out.
mas porém	but	Quero dormir, mas não consigo. I want to sleep, but I can’t.
segundo	according to	Segundo os médicos, o café não faz mal. According to the doctors, coffee is not bad.
exceto	except	Vou à academia todos os dias, exceto às sextas. I go to the gym every day except Friday.
então	then so	Bem, então esperarei por você. Okay, then I will wait for you.
no entanto	however	Estou cansado. No entanto, posso sair com você. I am tired. However, I can go out with you.
no obstante	nevertheless	O clima é seco; não obstante, às vezes chove. The climate is dry. Nevertheless, sometimes it rains.
para que a fim de que	so that in order to	Vou resumir o livro para que você possa entendê-lo. I will summarize the book so that you can understand it.
porque	because	Estudo espanhol porque quero morar no México. I study Spanish because I want to live in Mexico.
por causa de	because of	Não podemos sair por causa da neve. We can’t go out because of the snow.
em vez de ao invés de	instead	Em vez de sair hoje, vamos ver um filme. Instead of going out tonight, we’ll watch a movie.
pois já que	since because for	Vou ao café, pois tenho muito tempo livre. Vou ao café, já que tenho muito tempo livre. I’ll go to the coffee shop since I have enough free time.
dado que	given that	É um jogo importante, dado que o vencedor leva tudo. This is an important game, given that winner takes all.
portanto	therefore	Era tarde; portanto, não saímos ontem à noite. It was late; therefore, we didn’t go out last night.
caso contrário do contrário	otherwise	Espero que não chova; caso contrário, não saímos. I hope it doesn’t rain; otherwise, we don’t go out.
embora	although even if	Entendo o que ele disse, embora não consiga explicar. I understand what he said, although I can’t explain it.
apesar de	in spite of despite	Apesar de ser baixo, ele é um jogador muito bom. Despite being short, he is a very good player.
como	as since	Como está frio, vou trazer meu casaco. As it is cold, I will wear my coat.
ou seja	that is in other words	Falo inglês e português, ou seja, sou bilíngue. I speak English and Portuguese, in other words, I’m bilingual.
sempre que	provided that as long as	Eu vou te ajudar sempre que você precisar. I will help you as long as you need it.
enquanto	while as long as	Vamos comprar alguma coisa enquanto estamos aqui. Let’s buy something while we are here.
ou … ou …	either… or…	Bem, ou partimos agora ou mais tarde. Okay, we either leave now or later.
não… nem…	neither … nor …	Meu italiano não é bom nem ruim. My Italian is neither good nor bad.
além de à parte de	apart from besides	Além do tempo, não gosto deste lugar. Apart from the weather, I don’t like this place.
ao contrário de	unlike	Ao contrário de você, não sei alemão. Unlike you, I don’t know German.
