Comparative Grammar of Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and French

In these lessons, we go over a comparative grammar study of Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and French, which are considered the four most-spoken Romance languages in the world. The Romance languages, sometimes known as Neo-Latin, are a group of contemporary languages that emerged from Late Latin-based languages and their spoken forms, Vulgar Latin. They are the sole subgroup of the Indo-European language family’s Italic languages branch. It is estimated that there are 485 million native speakers of Spanish, 235 million Portuguese, 80 million native speakers of French, 65 million native speakers of Italian, and 24 million native speakers of Romanian. These five languages are all national languages of their respective nations of origin. Other examples of Romance languages include Catalan as well as other provincial dialects in Italy, Spain, France, Switzerland, and Austria.
