In Arabic, we use the ู…ูู€ู€ูู’ู€ุฑูŽุฏ (mufrad) โ€˜singularโ€™ to refer to a single unit, object, or person, the ู…ูู€ู€ุซูŽู€ู†ู‘ู€ู‰ (muthannฤ) โ€˜dualโ€™ to refer to two, and the ุฌูŽู€ู€ู…ู’ู€ู€ุน (jamโ€˜) โ€˜pluralโ€™ to refer to three or more units, objects, or people.

Forming the Dual

To form the dual, we typically add ู€ูู€ูŠู€ู† (-eyn) to the end of the singular noun. Below are some examples:

For verbs and adjectives, Palestinian-Jordanian Arabic generally uses the plural form to refer to both the dual and plural.

Forming the Plural

Some nouns and adjectives have a regular plural, called ุฌูŽู€ู€ู…ู’ู€ุน ุณู€ู€ุงู„ูู€ู€ู… (jamโ€˜ sฤlim) โ€˜sound plural,โ€™ while many others have an irregular plural, called ุฌูŽู€ู€ู€ู…ู’ู€ู€ุน ุชูŽู€ู€ูƒู’ู€ู€ุณูู€ู€ูŠู’ู€ู€ุฑ (jamโ€˜ taksฤซr) โ€˜broken plural.โ€™

The most reliable way to determine whether a noun or adjective takes a regular or irregular pluralโ€”and which irregular pattern to followโ€”is to consult an Arabic dictionary.

To form the ุฌูŽู€ู€ู…ู’ู€ุน ู…ูู€ุฐูŽูƒูŽู‘ู€ุฑ ุณู€ู€ุงู„ูู€ู€ู… (jamโ€˜ mudhakkar sฤlim) โ€˜sound masculine plural,โ€™ we add ู€ูู€ูŠู’ู€ู† (-ฤซn) to the end of the singular form.

Here are examples of masculine regular (sound) plurals in Palestinian-Jordanian Arabic:

Here are examples of the feminine regular (sound) plurals:

The irregular plural, or ุฌูŽู€ู€ู…ู’ู€ุน ุชูŽู€ู€ูƒู’ู€ู€ุณูู€ู€ูŠู’ู€ุฑ (jamโ€˜ taksฤซr) โ€˜broken plural,โ€™ is less predictable and often must be memorized. Think of irregular plurals in English, e.g., โ€˜women,โ€™ โ€˜geese,โ€™ โ€˜children,โ€™ etc. Irregular plurals are very common in Arabic, but there are patterns that can help predict the correct plural form.

Many students find it helpful to learn Arabic nouns in both their singular and plural forms until they have mastered plural patterns well enough to predict plurals with a high degree of accuracy.

We will focus on the 18 most common broken plural patterns in Palestinian-Jordanian Arabic, providing examples. Practice is essential to achieve mastery of these forms.

โ€  This pattern is also used with colors following the pattern ุฃูŽูู’ู€ู€ุนูŽู€ู€ู„ (โ€™af โ€˜al), e.g., the plural of ุฃูŽุฒู’ุฑูŽู‚ (โ€™azraq) โ€˜blueโ€™ is ุฒูุฑูู‚ (zuruq).

* Some words retain the final ุก (hamzah) in the original MSA pattern, i.e., ููู€ุนูŽู€ู„ุงุก (fuโ€˜alฤโ€™).

# The initial ุก (hamzah) is dropped in many plurals following this pattern, i.e., ูู’ู€ุนูŽู€ุงู„ (f โ€˜ฤl).

ยง The final ุก (hamzah) is dropped in many plurals following this pattern, i.e., ุฃูŽูู’ู€ุนูู€ู„ุง (โ€™af โ€˜ila).

|| There are also a few words that follow the similar plural pattern ููู€ู€ุนู’ู€ู€ู„ุงู† (fiโ€˜ lฤn).

Here is a list of examples of words following the 18 plural patterns described in this lesson.

It is often difficult to predict which plural pattern a word will follow. Some singular words may have more than one acceptable broken plural form. For example, the plural of the word ุดูŽู€ู‡ู’ู€ู€ุฑ (shahr) โ€˜monthโ€™ is ุดู’ู€ู€ู‡ูู€ู€ูˆู’ุฑ (sh[u]hลซr) or ุฃูŽุดู’ู€ู‡ูู€ู€ุฑ (โ€™ash hur).

Not all plurals fall under one of the aforementioned patterns. For example, the plural form of ุญู’ู€ู€ู…ูŽู€ู€ุงุฑ (แธฅmฤr) โ€˜donkeyโ€™ is ุญูŽู€ู€ู…ูู€ู€ูŠู’ู€ู€ุฑ (แธฅamฤซr), following the plural form ููŽู€ู€ุนูู€ู€ูŠู’ู€ู€ู„ (faโ€˜ฤซl).

The plural of ู…ูŽู€ู€ู€ุฑูŽุฉ (marah) โ€˜womanโ€™ is ู†ูู€ู€ุณู’ู€ู€ูˆูŽุงู† (niswฤn), another common irregular plural in Palestinian-Jordanian Arabic.
