In this lesson, we study idiomatic pronominal verbs in French.

A pronominal verb is a verb that is accompanied by at least one pronoun. An example of pronominal verbs is reflexive verbs, which use the pronoun โ€œseโ€ before the verb in the infinitive. A reflexive verb indicates that the action of the verb is performed on oneself.

Not all pronominal verbs are reflexive. Some verbs simply change their meaning when attached to pronouns to form new idiomatic meanings that do not often make complete sense if translated literally into English.

Take, for example, the verb โ€œallerโ€ (to go). If preceded by the pronouns โ€œseโ€ and โ€œen,โ€ we obtain the pronominal verb โ€œsโ€™en aller,โ€ which means โ€œto go away.โ€ For example, โ€œsโ€™en allerโ€ in the informal command form is โ€œVa-tโ€™en!โ€ (Go away!), that is: โ€œvaโ€ + โ€œteโ€ + โ€œen.โ€

Similarly, if we use the verb โ€œpasserโ€ (to passer) in its reflexive form, we obtain the pronominal verb โ€œse passer,โ€ which means โ€œto happen.โ€

There are many similar idiomatic pronominal verbs in French. Some use one pronoun, while others are use two pronouns. In general, a pronominal verbs uses a reflexive pronoun and/or the special pronouns โ€œyโ€ and โ€œen.โ€

Conjugations

To conjugate a pronominal verb, we place the pronouns in the same order before the conjugated verb. If the conjugation needs a past participle, as in the present perfect tense, we use the auxiliary โ€œรชtre,โ€ and the past participle takes the treatment of an adjective, meaning it must follow the subject in gender and number. Here is the conjugation of the pronominal verbs โ€œsโ€™en allerโ€ (to go away) and โ€œsโ€™y prendreโ€ (to set about doing something) in the present perfect:

 sโ€™en allersโ€™y prendre
jemโ€™en suis allรฉ(e)mโ€™y suis pris(e)
tutโ€™en es allรฉ(e)tโ€™y es pris(e)
il/ onsโ€™en est allรฉsโ€™y est pris
